Recruitment process

Northern Territory Correctional Services (NTCS) conducts a regular  recruitment drive. During this process an applicant’s suitability for inclusion on the NTCS Prison Officer in Training (POIT) Register is assessed. At the conclusion of the recruitment process applicants deemed suitable will be offered inclusion on the Register.

Applicants remain on the Register until:

  • they are selected for commencement and accept a position
  • the completion of the next annual recruitment drive
  • they request in writing to be removed from the Register
  • their criminal history report reveals an offence which is deemed to impact on their employment as a Prison Officer; or
  • their status changes, such as medical or criminal, or any other factor changes and they are no longer deemed eligible for employment.

Inclusion on the Register is not an offer of employment. During the following year, when a need for additional staff is identified, selections for placement on a course are made from those persons currently on the Register.

Job profile - Prison Officer

Overview

Northern Territory Correctional Services (NTCS) operates two adult correctional centres in the Northern Territory:

  • Darwin Correctional Centre, Berrimah
  • Alice Springs Correctional Centre,17km south of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.

The prisons cater for all classifications of male and female prisoners ie. maximum, medium, minimum and open security prisoners.

Primary objective

A Prison Officer works as part of a team responsible for the safe, secure and humane management of prisoners within and external to correctional centres.  Prison Officers duties also require interaction with prisoners, and guidance and assistance with programs that will assist with prisoners’ rehabilitation.

A significantly high percentage of prisoners (average over 80 per cent) are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Therefore it is essential that Prison Officers have an awareness and appreciation of this culture.

Prison Officers are required to wok on a shift work roster. This is in order to meet our statutory obligations of providing safe and secure custody for prisoners at all times.
